Should Federal Employees behind on Their Taxes Still Have Jobs?

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn, a Republican, and Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor, a Democrat, have introduced a US Senate bill that, if made into law, would allow the federal government to fire employees who were “seriously delinquent” in paying their federal taxes. They define “seriously delinquent” as having a notice of lien filed in the public tax records. Additionally, anyone with unpaid IRS bills would be ineligible for new employment with the federal government. The bill would allow federal agencies to make exceptions for individuals who are repaying their debts.

Why Now?

Senator Coburn suggests that the time is right for the bill because of the reported scandals that have been alleged against the IRS this spring. He also suggests that it is unfair to expect taxpaying Americans to fund the paychecks of those who are not paying their fair share of taxes. Senator Pryor suggests that it is necessary, given the current economy.

As of 2011, more than $3.5 billion was owed to the federal government by current and former federal employees. There was also allegedly an 11.5% increase in tax delinquency among federal workers in 2011 when compared to 2010.

The bill, if it is signed into law, would not only affect federal workers in Washington D.C. but could affect federal workers, such as employees of the US Postal Service, around the nation and here in Oklahoma.
