How Oklahoma Taxpayers Can Avoid 2013 Tax Problems Now

The fun and excitement of December ended just a few weeks ago. Now, instead of preparing party foods, many of us are dieting. Instead of buying holiday gifts, we are concentrating on our finances and beginning to get our 2013 taxes ready to file in April 2014.

The Time to Prevent 2013 Tax Problems Is Right Now

As you get ready to file your taxes, it is important to:

  • Gather all of the necessary documentation to accurately complete your tax forms. Take this month to gather all of the documentation that you need before you begin completing your taxes.
  • Keep all of the documentation in case of a later audit. Your papers could be important evidence in a later dispute.
  • Be honest on all of your forms. Don’t cheat, or you may face the consequences.
  • Be careful whom you trust. Hiring a professional tax preparer, or CPA, may be important. However, it is important to remember to review the tax preparer’s work and to know that in some cases you may be liable for the mistakes of a tax preparer.

It is also important to request an extension or work out an alternative arrangement with the IRS or Oklahoma Tax Commission if you can’t file on time or if you don’t have enough money to pay.
